Back in March 2023, there was an article entitled America’s Invisible Mountains written by Shane Cashman that opens with the following story:

I know a man who fled a cult. Everyone in the cult, including him, believed they were immortal.

But one day, one of the cult members died. They all sat with the corpse trying to come up with ways that could explain the death of someone who was supposed to be immortal. They brainstormed all sorts of ways to make sense of what appeared to be a very real death.

The cult travelled the country, and at some point, after they experienced the death of one of their members, my friend was in line to use a restroom. There was a bookshelf beside him. One book caught his eye. However, one of the laws in the cult was that no one was supposed to read books. His curiosity got the best of him. He opened the book. The first page he saw happened to describe a form of insanity. It said something like: if you are exploring and find a mountain, you would draw the mountain on your map. That is the right way to interpret your surroundings. However, if you have a map with a mountain, and you are where the mountain should be, but there is no mountain, then perhaps the map is a bad judge of reality. Someone who’s lost their hold of reality might try to come up with ways in which the mountain is there, despite what the map says. One might go so far as to say, well, maybe the mountain is invisible. This might sound absurd, but my friend spent time in a cult that had convinced themselves that they could not die. My friend read from the book, and it reminded him of the way they all tried to explain the death in the cult. The death was his invisible mountain. The death was not on the “map” through which the cult traveled the land. Their “map” said there would be no death. Yet there was a death and now he and the rest of the cult tried to find a way to explain away the death so as to not upset their loyalty to the map that the cult had placed over their reality.

He left the cult soon after realizing that his cult member’s death was his own invisible mountain.

This story depicts an important life lesson that we all face. Each of us has a map that we choose to follow that is our guide to reality. At some point we will be faced with an unfortunate event where our map of reality doesn’t match actual reality, then we need to make a choice. Will we abandon our old map for something better, or will we continue using our faulty innacurate map for the sake of pride and loyalty. An example of this happening in action can be seen in the history of Abraham.

[21:51] Before that, we granted Abraham his guidance and understanding, for we were fully aware of him. [21:52] He said to his father and his people, “What are these statues to which you are devoting yourselves?” [21:53] They said, “We found our parents worshiping them.” [21:54] He said, “Indeed, you and your parents have gone totally astray.” [21:55] They said, “Are you telling us the truth, or are you playing?” [21:56] He said, “Your only Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them. This is the testimony to which I bear witness. [21:57] “I swear by GOD, I have a plan to deal with your statues, as soon as you leave.” [21:58] He broke them into pieces, except for a big one, that they may refer to it. [21:59] They said, “Whoever did this to our gods is really a transgressor.” [21:60] They said, “We heard a youth threaten them; he is called Abraham.” [21:61] They said, “Bring him before the eyes of all the people, that they may bear witness.” [21:62] They said, “Did you do this to our gods, O Abraham?” [21:63] He said, “It is that big one who did it. Go ask them, if they can speak.” [21:64] They were taken aback, and said to themselves, “Indeed, you are the ones who have been transgressing.” [21:65] Yet, they reverted to their old ideas: “You know full well that these cannot speak.” [21:66] He said, “Do you then worship besides GOD what possesses no power to benefit you or harm you? [21:67] “You have incurred shame by worshiping idols beside GOD. Do you not understand?”

Every soul in this world attempts to find a map that they can use to help navigate through life. An ideal map will be the map that is best aligned with the reality of how this world works and how one should orient themselves such that one can maximize the possibility of success both in this world and in the Hereafter. If a map is inconsistent with the truth, it will lead people astray. So the more falsehood there is in a map, the more likely it is that the map will not guide but misguide the person.

Luckily for the believers, God has given them the perfect map for this journey; that of the Quran. Ironically, when disputes arose regarding the orientation of this perfect map, individuals created a secondary map, one that was never authorized by God and created by imperfect men; that of the Hadith. Then these people started thinking that it was the Hadith that was needed to understand and orient the Quran. They claimed that without the Hadith, the Quran is insufficient to guide, except how does one use a less accurate measure to calibrate a perfectly tuned piece of machinery. For example, imagine you had a scale that you attempted to calibrate using a less accurate weight. Rather than calibrating the machinery, you will only destroy its very function as an accurate measure.

The same goes for the Hadith and the Quran. The Quran is perfect, but the Hadith is inconsistent. If a person attempts to use the Hadith to understand the Quran, it will only increase their confusion and lead them to stray from the truth.

[39:29] GOD cites the example of a man who deals with disputing partners (Hadith), compared to a man who deals with only one consistent source (Quran). Are they the same? Praise be to GOD; most of them do not know.

Hadith and Judgment Day

According to the most authentic Hadith sources, it claims that the prophet Muhammad thought that the end of the world was to happen in the next few generations after him, potentially even during his life.

Narrated Abu Musa: The sun eclipsed and the Prophet (ﷺ) got up, being afraid that it might be the Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment). He went to the Mosque and offered the prayer with the longest Qiyam, bowing and prostration that I had ever seen him doing. Then he said, “These signs which Allah sends do not occur because of the life or death of somebody, but Allah makes His worshipers afraid by them. So when you see anything thereof, proceed to remember Allah, invoke Him, and ask for His forgiveness.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 1059
https://sunnah.com/bukhari:1059

In another narration, it states that the prophet stated that the Hour would occur within 100 years.

Jabir b. ‘Abdullah reported: I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying this one month before his death: You asked me about the Last Hour whereas its knowledge is with Allah. I, however, take an oath and say that none upon the earth, the created beings, would survive at the end of one hundred years.

Sahih Muslim 2538a
https://sunnah.com/muslim:2538a

‘Abdullah b. Umar reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) led us ‘Isha’ prayer at the latter part of the night and when he had concluded it with salutations he stood up and said: Have you seen this night of yours? At the end of one hundred years after this none would survive on the surface of the earth (from amount my Companions). Ibn Umar said: People were (not understanding) these words of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) which had been uttered pertaining to one hundred years. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) in fact meant (by these words) that on that day none from amongst those who had been living upon the earth (from amongst his Companions) would survive (after one hundred years) and that would be the end of this generation.

Sahih Muslim 2537a
https://sunnah.com/muslim:2537a

The narrator of this Hadith attempted to clarify this false attribution by implying that the mention of 100 years in this Hadith was only about the companions of that time, despite the Hadith not stating “none of you” but instead that “none would survive on the surface of the earth” which implies that this was about all of mankind.

In another narration, it states that the youngest child among the prophet would not live to an old age before the hour was to come.

Anas reported that a person asked Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as to when the Last Hour would come. He had in his presence a young boy of the Ansar who was called Muhammad. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: If this young boy lives, he may not grow very old till (he would see) the Hour is established.

Sahih Muslim 2953a
https://sunnah.com/muslim:2953a

In the History of al-Tabari, Volume 1, p. 183-184, Tabari calculates, based on the most sound Hadith, that the lifespan of the Earth to Muhammad was 6,500 years, and from the coming of Muhammad to the End of the World would be another 500 years, ~1132 CE.

This example singel handily demonstrates that Hadith is a terrible map for reality. In this most cut-and-dry case, we see that the Hadith narration is so utterly wrong regarding the timing of the age of the Earth and the End of the World. Yet, why put any trust in such an inaccurate map? Perhaps in other facets, it performs better?

Hadith and Science

Hadith is also at odds with science.

  • During sexual intercourse, pending on if the man or woman discharges first will determine if the child is a male or female. (Sahih Muslim 315a)
  • That humans have been getting progressively shorter since the time of Adam (Sahih al-Bukhari 3326)
  • That black cumin is the cure to every disease except death (Sahih al-Bukhari 5687)
  • That healing is in three things: a gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5680)
  • That everything from a human body decays except for the tailbone (Sahih Muslim 2955a)
  • That anyone who eats seven ‘Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5445)

Hadith and Morality

Hadith is at odds with basic morality and advocates all kinds of vice, including:

‘Amir reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying: The woman who buries alive her new-born girl and the girl who is buried alive both will go to Hell. This tradition has also been transmitted by Ibn Mas’ud from the Prophet (May peace be upon him) to the same effect through a different chain of narrators.

Hadith Leads People Astray

The Hadith does nothing but lead people astray from the truth, and the Quran informs us of the ultimate outcome of those who choose to follow other sources instead of the Quran.

[25:27] The day will come when the transgressor will bite his hands (in anguish) and say, “Alas, I wish I had followed the path with the messenger.
[25:28] “Alas, woe to me, I wish I did not take that person as a friend.
[25:29] “He has led me away from the reminder after it came to me. Indeed, the devil lets down his human victims.”
[25:30] The messenger said, “My Lord, my people have deserted this Quran.”

Notice the person mentioned above who is destined for Hell regrets not following the path of the messenger and abandoning the reminder when it was given to them. Then we see the messenger’s testimony against his people on the Day of Ressurection regarding individuals with such regrets is that his people have deserted this Quran. Notice there is no mention of the Sunnah or Hadith in the messenger’s statement. This shows that the preserved reminder the messenger was to deliver and that we are to uphold is the Quran alone.

[6:112] We have permitted the enemies of every prophet—human and jinn devils—to inspire in each other fancy words, in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.
[6:113] This is to let the minds of those who do not believe in the Hereafter listen to such fabrications, and accept them, and thus expose their real convictions.

[6:114] Shall I seek other than GOD as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed? Those who received the scripture recognize that it has been revealed from your Lord, truthfully. You shall not harbor any doubt.
[6:115] The word of your Lord is complete, in truth and justice. Nothing shall abrogate His words. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.

[6:116] If you obey the majority of people on earth, they will divert you from the path of GOD. They follow only conjecture; they only guess.

Quran and Science

Now contrast the map of Hadith with that of the perfect map, the Quran. This map is flawless, and not only does it not conflict with reality, but it details how this world operates and lifts the veil that blocks many from seeing the truth. It does this by appealing to the very things one needs to be successful in this world and in the Hereafter. So let’s see how the Quran compares against science, morality, and reason.

Quran and Science

Science is the mechanism we use to understand the physical world. While the Quran is not a science book, we see that not only is there no conflict between scientific understanding and the claims made in the Quran, but as our knowledge of science increases, so does our appreciation for the facts that are specified in the Quran.

[21:30] Do the unbelievers not realize that the heaven and the earth used to be one solid mass that we exploded into existence? And from water we made all living things. Would they believe?

[21:31] And we placed on earth stabilizers, lest it spreads and tumbles with them, and we placed straight roads therein, that they may be guided.

[21:32] And we rendered the sky a guarded ceiling. Yet, they are totally oblivious to all the portents therein.

[21:33] And He is the One who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon; each floating in its own orbit.

  1. The expansion of the universe (51:47).
  2. The universe started out as a gaseous mass (41:11).
  3. The description of the accurate embryology of fetus (23:14)
  4. The man’s seminal fluid decides the baby’s gender (53:45-46)
  5. The shape of the Earth (10:24, 39:5, 79:30)
  6. The proportion of oxygen diminishes as we climb toward the sky (6:125)

Quran and Reason

The Quran also encourages the scientific pursuit and the use of logic and reason to understand the truth.

[29:20] Say, “Roam the earth and find out the origin of life.” For GOD will thus initiate the creation in the Hereafter. GOD is Omnipotent.

[50:6] Have they not looked at the sky above them, and how we constructed it and adorned it, without a flaw?

[88:17] Why do they not reflect on the camels and how they are created?
[88:18] And the sky and how it is raised.
[88:19] And the mountains and how they are constructed.
[88:20] And the earth and how it is built.

[56:58] Have you noted the semen that you produce?

[56:63] Have you noted the crops you reap?

[56:68] Have you noted the water you drink?

[56:71] Have you noted the fire you ignite?

Throughout the Quran, it commands people to study, reflect, and use their logic and reason to accept and act upon the truth. We see that the Quran relies on logical arguments to have people question their predispositions and advocates against following our parent’s religion or inherited practices blindly.

[2:170] When they are told, “Follow what GOD has revealed herein,” they say, “We follow only what we found our parents doing.” What if their parents did not understand, and were not guided?

[2:171] The example of such disbelievers is that of parrots who repeat what they hear of sounds and calls, without understanding. Deaf, dumb, and blind; they cannot understand.

Quran and Morality

Unlike the Hadith, which is riddled with immorality, the Quran promotes what any sensible person would deem moral and virtuous. Throughout the Quran, it advocates charity, honesty, integrity, patience, justice, kindness, forgiveness, and giving a voice to the weak. Not only is this rampant in the text, but it is the names that God uses to describe Himself, most notably in the opening statement of the Quran.

[1:1] In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

[81:0] In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful [81:1] When the sun is rolled. [81:2] The stars are crashed into each other. [81:3] The mountains are wiped out. [81:4] The reproduction is halted. [81:5] The beasts are summoned. [81:6] The oceans are set aflame. [81:7] The souls are restored to their bodies. [81:8] The girl who was buried alive is asked: [81:9] For what crime was she killed?

[107:0] In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful [107:1] Do you know who really rejects the faith? [107:2] That is the one who mistreats the orphans. [107:3] And does not advocate the feeding of the poor. [107:4] And woe to those who observe the contact prayers (Salat)— [107:5] who are totally heedless of their prayers. [107:6] They only show off. [107:7] And they forbid charity.

Conclusion

the Quran is the most accurate and reliable source of guidance, as it is the direct word of God, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel. The Quran provides a comprehensive and cohesive worldview that offers insights into the nature of reality and the purpose of human existence. Its teachings have been thoroughly vetted for centuries, and it continues to provide the truth to the realities of this world without contradiction.

[4:82] Why do they not study the Quran carefully? If it were from other than GOD, they would have found in it numerous contradictions.

On the other hand, the Hadith is a collection of fabricated sayings and actions falsely attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, compiled by unauthorized imperfect men that is consistently at odds with reality, logic, and morality. As a result, the Hadith is a map full of invisible mountains, which only leads people astray and creates confusion and uncertainty for those who choose to follow it as a source besides the Quran.

[34:44] We did not give them any other books to study, nor did we send to them before you another warner.

[68:37] Do you have another book you are studying?
[68:38] In it, do you find anything you want?

[77:50] Which Hadith after this do they believe in?

[45:6] These are GOD’s revelations that we recite to you truthfully. In which Hadith other than GOD and His revelations do they believe?
