In sura 2 verse 30, God informed the angels that He is placing a Ruler ( خَلِيفَة / Khalīfa) on Earth.

[2:30] Recall that your Lord said to the angels, “I am placing a representative (a temporary god) on Earth.” They said, “Will You place therein one who will spread evil therein and shed blood, while we sing Your praises, glorify You, and uphold Your absolute authority?” He said, “I know what you do not know.”

From previous studies, we know that this Khalifa mentioned above is Satan. In this article, we want to look at some of the verses from the Bible that confirm this understanding.

In Isaiah 14, we are informed of the supercilious thought that Satan entertained, thinking that he could be a god like the Most High.

12 How you have fallen from heaven,
    morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
    you who once laid low the nations!
13 You said in your heart,
    “I will ascend to the heavens;
I will raise my throne
    above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
    on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.[b]
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
    I will make myself like the Most High.”
15 But you are brought down to the realm of the dead,
    to the depths of the pit.

16 Those who see you stare at you,
    they ponder your fate:
“Is this the one who shook the earth
    and made kingdoms tremble,
17 the one who made the world a wilderness,
    who overthrew its cities
    and would not let his captives go home?”

When Jesus was tempted by Satan, Satan informs him that he was given authority and kingship on Earth.

Luke 4
The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”

Matthew 4
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

In the book of John, Jesus makes three references to the prince/ruler (archōn / ἄρχων) on Earth.

John 12:31
31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the ruler* of this world will be driven out.

John 14
29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince* of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

John 16
But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince*of this world now stands condemned.

1 John 5:
19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
