The Quran informs us that God created spouses for individuals to find tranquility and contentment with them.

[30:21] Among His proofs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, in order to have tranquility and contentment with each other, and He placed in your hearts love and care towards your spouses. In this, there are sufficient proofs for people who think.

The Quran does not shy away from discussing the intimate relationship that is held between a husband and wife and the responsibility this entails. The Quran describes spouses as the keepers of each other’s secrets. This means that the personal details of their relationship are to be kept private, and others should respect this privacy.

[2:187] Permitted for you is sexual intercourse with your wives during the nights of fasting. They are the keepers of your secrets, and you are the keepers of their secrets. GOD knew that you used to betray your souls, and He has redeemed you, and has pardoned you. Henceforth, you may have intercourse with them, seeking what GOD has permitted for you. You may eat and drink until the white thread of light becomes distinguishable from the dark thread of night at dawn. Then, you shall fast until sunset. Sexual intercourse is prohibited if you decide to retreat to the masjid (during the last ten days of Ramadan). These are GOD’s laws; you shall not transgress them. GOD thus clarifies His revelations for the people, that they may attain salvation.

The Quran even sets rules for how individuals within a household should respect the preserve the private times between spouses. This is particularly the case for children who are at home with their parents.

[24:58] O you who believe, permission must be requested by your servants and the children who have not attained puberty (before entering your rooms). This is to be done in three instances—before the Dawn Prayer, at noon when you change your clothes to rest, and after the Night Prayer. These are three private times for you. At other times, it is not wrong for you or them to mingle with one another. GOD thus clarifies the revelations for you. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.

The Quran also informs us that the prophet was to be treated as a father figure and his wives like that of mothers for the believers.

[33:6] The prophet is closer to the believers than they are to each other, and his wives are like mothers to them. The relatives ought to take care of one another in accordance with GOD’s scripture. Thus, the believers shall take care of their relatives who immigrate to them, provided they have taken care of their own families first. These are commandments of this scripture.

The Quran placed special stipulations on the companions of the prophet to respect the privacy of the prophet and his wives, particularly within their household. They were commanded to not overstay their welcome, that if they wanted to ask the prophet’s wives for anything to ask them from behind a barrier, and that the people were prohibited from marrying any woman who was previously married to the prophet. The purpose for this is to keep a separation between the prophet and his private life.

[33:53] O you who believe, do not enter the prophet’s homes unless you are given permission to eat, nor shall you force such an invitation in any manner. If you are invited, you may enter. When you finish eating, you shall leave; do not engage him in lengthy conversations (Hadith). This used to hurt the prophet, and he was too shy to tell you. But GOD does not shy away from the truth. If you have to ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a barrier. This is purer for your hearts and their hearts. You are not to hurt the messenger of GOD. You shall not marry his wives after him, for this would be a gross offense in the sight of GOD.

Interestingly, in the Arabic this verse utilizes the term hadith ( لِحَدِيثٍ ) for the word translated as “conversations,” and more specifically, telling the people to not engage in hadith ( لِحَدِيثٍ ) with the prophet. It is also worth pointing out that the verse also specifically commands the people not hurt the messenger.

Ironically, this is exactly what people did when they created and propagated the aHadith literature as a source besides the Quran. If we consult the aHadith we find all kinds of gross fabrications attributed to the prophet regarding the supposed sexual relationship he had with his wives.

*Note: In Sahih al-Bukhari 2097, the translator distorted the translation in an attempt to hide the grossness of what is stated. In the Arabic, it states, “أَفَلاَ جَارِيَةً تُلاَعِبُهَا وَتُلاَعِبُكَ” the word جَارِيَةً (jariyatan) specifically about a “little girl” or “little slave girl” in this context. Additionally, we can see another narration of this Hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari 4052, as well as Book 8 Hadith 220 of “Bulugh al-Maram” or Muwatta Malik Book 30, Hadith 5.

It is absolutely absurd to think that despite the repeated commandments in the Quran that the relationship between spouses is to be kept private, and that the people are to respect the privacy of the prophet and his wives, that such narratives would have been freely shared among the people by the prophet, his wives, and his companions. These are clearly fabrications of the worst kind.

It is worth pointing out that throughout the Quran, when Muhammad is addressed as “prophet” (nabi / نَّبِي ), it is always regarding when he was alive. While when he is addressed as a “messenger” (rasool / رَسُول ) this can apply even after his death. The best example of this is seen in the following two verses.

[49:1] O you who believe, do not place your opinion above that of GOD and His messenger. You shall reverence GOD. GOD is Hearer, Omniscient. [49:2] O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the prophet, nor shall you shout at him as you shout at each other, lest your works become nullified while you do not perceive.

From the above verses, we can conclude that an opinion of a person does not disappear after they die, yet one cannot raise the voice over a dead person.

[39:30] You (Muhammad) will surely die, just like they will die. [39:31] On the Day of Resurrection, before your Lord, you people will feud with one another.

The significance here is that 33:53 addresses Muhammad as a prophet when discussing the responsibility of the believers regarding respecting the privacy of the prophet and his wives, but when it informs the commandment not to hurt him, he is addressed as a messenger. This shows that by hurting his reputation, the upholders of Hadith are hurting Muhammad’s legacy as the prophet of God who delivered the Quran.

Not only did they attribute false narratives about the most intimate matters regarding the prophet’s sexual relationships with his wives, but they also hurt his reputation for potential future believers who may have accepted the faith had they not heard such disgusting narratives being propagated and celebrated long after his death by his supposed followers. When these aHadith were collected, canonized, and propagated, they only served to repel people from the path of God.

[47 Muhammad:32] Those who disbelieve and repel from the path of GOD, and oppose the messenger after the guidance has been manifested for them, will never hurt GOD in the least. Instead, He nullifies their works. [47:33] O you who believe, you shall obey GOD, and obey the messenger. Otherwise, all your works will be in vain. [47:34] Those who disbelieve and repel from the path of GOD, then die as disbelievers, GOD will never forgive them.

47:33 states that we are to obey God and His messenger, and this is typically the shallow reasoning people give in justification for upholding the Hadith besides the Quran, yet by upholding these false doctrines, they are going against the words of God in the Quran, and the scripture that the prophet dedicated his life to deliver.

[4:51] Have you noted those who received a portion of the scripture, and how they believe in idolatry and false doctrine, then say, “The disbelievers are better guided than the believers”?!

[16:105] The only ones who fabricate false doctrines are those who do not believe in GOD’s revelations; they are the real liars.

[9:31] They have set up their religious leaders and scholars as lords, instead of GOD. Others deified the Messiah, son of Mary. They were all commanded to worship only one god. There is no god except He. Be He glorified, high above having any partners.

[3:98] Say, “O followers of the scripture, why do you reject these revelations of GOD, when GOD is witnessing everything you do?” [3:99] Say, “O followers of the scripture, why do you repel from the path of GOD those who wish to believe, and seek to distort it, even though you are witnesses?” GOD is never unaware of anything you do. [3:100] O you who believe, if you obey some of those who received the scripture, they will revert you, after having believed, into disbelievers.

[35:8] Note the one whose evil work is adorned in his eyes, until he thinks that it is righteous. GOD thus sends astray whoever wills (to go astray), and He guides whoever wills (to be guided). Therefore, do not grieve over them. GOD is fully aware of everything they do.

The Quran warns the believers about their responsibility when they come across this kind of false information. It informs us that the real believers would call this out for what it really is, “obviously a big lie.”

[24:11] A gang among you produced a big lie. Do not think that it was bad for you; instead, it was good for you. Meanwhile, each one of them has earned his share of the guilt. As for the one who initiated the whole incident, he has incurred a terrible retribution. [24:12] When you heard it, the believing men and the believing women should have had better thoughts about themselves, and should have said, “This is obviously a big lie.”

The reason I believe the verse states that this was good for the people is because it was a test where an individual’s true conviction was exposed. This is no different than Satan whose innermost thoughts came to light when he was commanded to fall prostrate, but he did not. Such tests allow the person and all those around them to bring to light their actual beliefs, and the production of aHadith falsely attributed to the prophet is no different. This allows everyone to be able to see who worships God alone and believes in the Hereafter and who does not.

[6:112] We have permitted the enemies of every prophet—human and jinn devils—to inspire in each other fancy words, in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.

[6:113] This is to let the minds of those who do not believe in the Hereafter listen to such fabrications, and accept them, and thus expose their real convictions.

[6:114] Shall I seek other than GOD as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed? Those who received the scripture recognize that it has been revealed from your Lord, truthfully. You shall not harbor any doubt.

[6:115] The word of your Lord is complete, in truth and justice. Nothing shall abrogate His words. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.

[6:116] If you obey the majority of people on earth, they will divert you from the path of GOD. They follow only conjecture; they only guess.

[40:73] They will be asked, “Where are the idols you used to worship, [40:74] “beside GOD?” They will say, “They have abandoned us. In fact, when we worshiped them, we were worshiping nothing.” Thus does GOD send the disbelievers astray. [40:75] This is because you used to rejoice in false doctrines, on earth, and you used to promote them. [40:76] Enter the gates of Gehenna, wherein you abide forever. What a miserable destiny for the arrogant ones.
