The Quran warns us that human and jinn devils will try to deceive people through their false narrations.
[6:112] We have permitted the enemies of every prophet—human and jinn devils—to inspire in each other fancy words, in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.
God allowed them to do this as a test for individuals who do not believe in the Hereafter.
[6:113] This is to let the minds of those who do not believe in the Hereafter listen to such fabrications, and accept them, and thus expose their real convictions.
A prime example of the utter nonsense that individuals choose to uphold over the verses of God in the Quran can be seen in the Hadith regarding the supposed verses that were eaten by a sheep regarding stoning and adult male breastfeeding.
Adult Male Breastfeeding (Suckling)
According to Hadith, the prophet encouraged grown men in certain situations to be breastfed by women to please their jealous husbands. They believed that once the man is breastfed by the woman, they will no longer have sexual desire for one another since they will be forbidden in marriage to one another.
If common sense doesn’t tell you that this is not a righteous act, let alone a good idea to reduce sexual tension between men and women, then I think it is time to do some real soul searching.
[35:8] Note the one whose evil work is adorned in his eyes, until he thinks that it is righteous. GOD thus sends astray whoever wills (to go astray), and He guides whoever wills (to be guided). Therefore, do not grieve over them. GOD is fully aware of everything they do.
Regarding the supposed stoning verses, below are some of the Hadith regarding the certainty of individuals that the stoning verses were part of the original Quran.
Needless to say, among traditionalists, these Hadith are considered very sound due to the various narrations and strength of the mutawatir. But despite this, such an understanding is in clear contradiction to the verses in the Quran. According to the Quran, the punishment for adultery is one hundred lashes for free women who are married (24:2), while the punishment is half of that for the slave who is freed through marriage (4:25).
[24:2] The adulteress and the adulterer you shall whip each of them a hundred lashes. Do not be swayed by pity from carrying out GOD’s law, if you truly believe in GOD and the Last Day. And let a group of believers witness their penalty.
[4:25] Those among you who cannot afford to marry free believing women, may marry believing slave women. GOD knows best about your belief, and you are equal to one another, as far as belief is concerned. You shall obtain permission from their guardians before you marry them, and pay them their due dowry equitably. They shall maintain moral behavior, by not committing adultery, or having secret lovers. Once they are freed through marriage, if they commit adultery, their punishment shall be half of that for the free women. Marrying a slave shall be a last resort for those unable to wait. To be patient is better for you. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
But if the punishment for adultery is stoning per the Hadith, then how does one perform half a stoning? While traditional Muslims may have no problem with contradictory rulings based on their false understanding of abrogation, such principles are in direct contrast to the claims of the Quran, which states that the Quran does not have any contradictions.
[4:82] Why do they not study the Quran carefully? If it were from other than GOD, they would have found in it numerous contradictions.
The Stoning Verse
So if there was a supposed stoning verse, and so many individuals per the Hadith said they knew the verse by heart and were afraid that it was going to be lost for the ages, where can we find the actual statement?
Sunan Ibn Majah is a collection of hadith compiled by Imam Muhammad bin Yazid Ibn Majah al-Qazvini (rahimahullah). It is widely considered to be the sixth of the six canonical collections of hadith (Kutub as-Sittah). It consists of 4341 ahadith in 37 books. In Vol, 3, Book 20, Hadith 2553 we find the supposed verse quoted.
Here is a word-by-word breakdown:
|الشَّيْخُ||a-shaikhu||the old man*|
|وَالشَّيْخَةُ||wa-a-shaikhatu||and the old woman*|
|فَارْجُمُوهُمَا||far-jumuhuma||then stone both of them|
There are a number of major issues with this statement that are exceptionally suspect.
1. The term a-shaikhu ( الشَّيْخُ ) doesn’t just mean an old man, but specifically an impotent old man. This word is used four times in the Quran (11:72, 12:78, 28:23, and 40:67), with the context most clearly used in the response from Abraham’s wife when the angels provided them the news that she was going to bear a son.
[11:72] She said, “Woe to me, how could I bear a child at my age, and here is my husband; an old man? This is really strange!”
2. Just like how in the English language, we would not call a woman impotent, the word a-shaikhatu ( الشَّيْخَةُ), in the feminine form, is almost never used in Classical Arabic and never utlized in this form in the Quran. In the Quran, the term that is used for such women would be ʿajūzun ( عَجُوزٌ ).
3. The Hadith regarding stoning usually requires pregnancy as proof that the act was committed in order to justify stoning, but this would not apply to two people who are both elderly and impotent unless a miracle was to take place like that of Abraham and his wife.
4. This statement only covers when both the man and women in the act of adultery are elderly and would not apply to all other situations.
It is obvious that such Hadith are clear fabrications as well as ridiculous.
[7:37] Who is more evil than those who invent lies about GOD, or reject His revelations? These will get their share, in accordance with the scripture, then, when our messengers come to terminate their lives, they will say, “Where are the idols you used to implore beside GOD?” They will say, “They have abandoned us.” They will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.
Individuals who choose to follow such Hadith are displaying their true convictions towards the Quran by displaying their lack of trust in God’s words when He says that the Quran is complete, fully detailed, and our only source of religious law.
[6:114] Shall I seek other than GOD as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed? Those who received the scripture recognize that it has been revealed from your Lord, truthfully. You shall not harbor any doubt.
[6:115] The word of your Lord is complete, in truth and justice. Nothing shall abrogate His words. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.
[6:116] If you obey the majority of people on earth, they will divert you from the path of GOD. They follow only conjecture; they only guess.
