Sura 74 of the Quran is entitled The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir / الـمـدثـر). The Sura begins by God calling out “the hidden secret” to come out and warn.
[74:1] O you hidden secret. [74:2] Come out and warn. [74:3] Extol your Lord. [74:4] Purify your garment.
The the Sura then discusses the one who refused to accept the proofs of the Quran and claims that the Quran is manmade.
[74:11] Let Me deal with one I created as an individual. [74:12] I provided him with lots of money. [74:13] And children to behold. [74:14] I made everything easy for him. [74:15] Yet, he is greedy for more. [74:16] He stubbornly refused to accept these proofs. [74:17] I will increasingly punish him.
[74:18] For he reflected, then decided. [74:19] Miserable is what he decided. [74:20] Miserable indeed is what he decided. [74:21] He looked. [74:22] He frowned and whined. [74:23] Then he turned away arrogantly. [74:24] He said, “This is but clever magic! [74:25] “This is human made.”
God continues that He will prove such a claim false.
[74:26] I will commit him to retribution. [74:27] What retribution! [74:28] Thorough and comprehensive. [74:29] Obvious to all the people.
Then the Sura seems to pivot by making a statement that almost seems out of place.
[74:30] Over it is nineteen.
The following verse then provides five reasons for this number:
[74:31] We appointed angels to be guardians of Hell, and we assigned their number (19)
(1) to disturb the disbelievers,
(2) to convince the Christians and Jews (that this is a divine scripture),
(3) to strengthen the faith of the faithful,
(4) to remove all traces of doubt from the hearts of Christians, Jews, as well as the believers, and
(5) to expose those who harbor doubt in their hearts,
and the disbelievers; they will say, “What did GOD mean by this allegory?” GOD thus sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills. None knows the soldiers of your Lord except He. This is a reminder for the people.
God then provides the following warning to the human race regarding this:
[74:32] Absolutely, (I swear) by the moon. [74:33] And the night as it passes. [74:34] And the morning as it shines. One of the Great Miracles [74:35] This is one of the great miracles. [74:36] A warning to the human race.
Some claim that the number 19 is merely just the number of angels guarding Hell. But such an understanding appears to negate the other aspects of the verse e.g. the Hidden Secret, the disbeliever rejecting the proof of the Quran and calling it man-made, the five reasons for the number 19, and how this is a warning to the human race.
Let’s start with the term The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir / الـمـدثـر). What does this mean? A secret by its own nature is hidden, so what is one to make of a hidden secret? When we look up the meaning of the Al-Muddath-thir / الـمـدثـر we see that the root for this word is د ث ر and signifies something that is hidden in plain sight.
Even today when people want to conceal the content of a message that could be intercepted by nefarious actors they typically utilize encryption to achieve such objectives. Encryption is a method where the key to unlock the true content of the message is embedded inside the coded message itself, but becomes inaccessible to those who do not have the proper key to decrypt the message. Encryption is a form of Al-Muddath-thir / الـمـدثـر.
In the case of Sura 74, God is giving us a decryption key in plain sight via the number 19, and providing the reasoning behind this number in Sura 74:31.
The number 19 only occurs one time in the entire Quran, which is in Sura 74. Coincidentally in the year 1974, it was discovered that the entire structure of the Quran is mathematically composed by the number 19. For instance, the number of Suras in the Quran is 114 = 19 x6. The number of verses in the Quran is 6,346 = 19 x 334. The number of times the word Allah is mentioned in the Quran is 2,698 = 19 x 142. If you count all the verses where the word Allah occurs that number is 118,123 = 19 x 6,217.
The momentous discovery that “19” is the Quran’s common denominator became a reality in January 1974, coinciding with Zul-Hijjah 1393 A.H. The Quran was revealed in 13 B.H. (Before Hijrah). This makes the number of years from the revelation of the Quran to the revelation of its miracle 1393 + 13 = 1406 = 19×74. As noted above, the unveiling of the Miracle took place in January 1974. The correlation between 19×74 lunar years and 1974 solar years could not escape notice. This is especially uncanny in view of the fact that “19” is mentioned in Sura 74.
In addition to all this,
- The verse 74:31 has 57 words = 19 x 3
- The first 19 verses of Sura 74 contain 57 words = 19×3 words
- The number of words from the beginning of Sura 74:1 to 74:30 where it mentions “nineteen” = 19 x5 = 95 words
- The number of letters from the beginning of Sura 74 to the word “nineteen” in 74:30 = 361 = 19 x 19 letters
- From 74:1-8 there are exactly 19 [19×1] words
- From 74:1-19 there are exactly 57 [19×3] words
- From 74:1-30 there are exactly 95 [19×5] words
- From 74:1-31 there are exactly 152 [19×8] words
- From 74:1-47 there are exactly 209 [19×11] words
- The word قَدَّرَ used in 74:18-20 has a special connection with the mathematical miracle which is detailed in the following article.
