Appendix 1 of the Authorized English Translation of the Quran, translated by Dr. Rashad Khalifa, states that the number of words between the Bismillah at the opening of the Sura to the Bismillah in verse 30 is 342 words = 19 x 18.
Some claim the total number of words is 349 rather than 342. The discrepancy depends on how the words are counted. For example, should the Bismillah at the start or the one in 27:30 be included in the count? For instance, in Dr. Rashad Khalifa’s translation of the Quran in the footnote for 40:34, he states the following:
**40:34 It is noteworthy that we find the name “Rashad” in the Arabic text precisely four verses ahead of the injunction against saying “the last messenger,” and also four verses after it.
Yet, when we do the count for this simple example, we see that he is excluding 40:29 and including 40:38 in his counts. Or put another way from the first occurrence of ar-Rashad to the second.
| [40:29] “O my people, today you have kingship and the upperhand. But who will help us against GOD’s judgment, should it come to us?” Pharaoh said, “You are to follow only what I see fit; I will guide you only in the right path.”
| [40:30] The one who believed said, “O my people, I fear for you the same fate as the previous opponents. | 4 | وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِىٓ ءَامَنَ يَٰقَوْمِ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُم مِّثْلَ يَوْمِ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ |
| [40:31] “The opponents of Noah, and ‘Ãd, Thamûd, and others who came after them. GOD does not wish any injustice for the people. | 3 | مِثْلَ دَأْبِ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ وَعَادٍ وَثَمُودَ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ يُرِيدُ ظُلْمًا لِّلْعِبَادِ |
| [40:32] “O my people, I fear for you the Day of Summoning. | 2 | وَيَٰقَوْمِ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلتَّنَادِ |
| [40:33] “That is the day when you may wish to turn around and flee. But nothing will protect you then from GOD. Whomever GOD sends astray, nothing can guide him.” | 1 | يَوْمَ تُوَلُّونَ مُدْبِرِينَ مَا لَكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ وَمَن يُضْلِلِ ٱللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِنْ هَادٍ |
| [40:34] Joseph had come to you before that with clear revelations, but you continued to doubt his message. Then, when he died you said, “GOD will not send any other messenger after him. (He was the last messenger)!”** GOD thus sends astray those who are transgressors, doubtful.
| [40:35] They argue against GOD’s revelations, without any basis. This is a trait that is most abhorred by GOD and by those who believe. GOD thus seals the hearts of every arrogant tyrant.
| [40:36] Pharaoh said, “O Hãmãn, build for me a high tower, that I may reach out and discover. | 2 | وَقَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ يَٰهَٰمَٰنُ ٱبْنِ لِى صَرْحًا لَّعَلِّىٓ أَبْلُغُ ٱلْأَسْبَٰبَ |
| [40:37] “I want to reach the heaven, and take a look at the god of Moses. I believe he is a liar.” Thus were the evil works of Pharaoh adorned in his eyes, and thus was he kept from following (the right) path. Pharaoh’s scheming was truly evil.
| [40:38] The one who believed said, “O my people, follow me, and I will guide you in the right way. | 4 | وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِىٓ ءَامَنَ يَٰقَوْمِ ٱتَّبِعُونِ أَهْدِكُمْ سَبِيلَ ٱلرَّشَادِ |
There is also the question regarding whether verbs preceded by a negation particle should be counted as one word or two?
For background, negation in Classical Arabic can be expressed through several particles, each used in different contexts or with various verb tenses. Here is a list of common negation particles, including the ones used in the first 30 verses of Sura 27 in red.
- لَا (Lā) – Used to negate present tense verbs
- Example: لا يَكْتُبُ (Lā yaktubu al-kitāba) – “He does not write.”
- لَمْ (Lam) – Used to negate past tense verbs
- Example: لَمْ يَكْتُبِ (Lam yaktubi) – “He did not write.”
- لَنْ (Lan) – Used to negate future actions.
- Example: لَنْ يَكْتُبَ (Lan yaktuba) – “He will not write.”
- مَا (Mā) – General negation, often used with past tense.
- Example: مَا كَتَبَ (Mā kataba) – “He did not write.”
- لَيْسَ (Laysa) – Used to negate nominal sentences (equivalent to “is not”).
- Example: لَيْسَ بِكاتِبِ (Laysa bi-kātibi) – “He is not the writer.”
The table below shows that when the negation particle preceding a verb is counted as a single word, and the four words of Bismillah from 27:30 are included in the count, the total becomes 342 = 19×18.
