This is the opening verse of the Quran. It occurs 114 times in the Quran (19×6) and appears at the beginning of 113 Suras of the Quran. This statement consists of exactly 19 letters and has been written this way since the earliest manuscripts.

Here is one of the oldest manuscripts from the University of Birmingham, which is carbon-dated to potentially during the prophet’s life.

If we split the letters of the Basmalah, we can more clearly see this.

Interestingly, Basmalah containing exactly 19 letters was not a point of contention until the discovery of the mathematical miracle of the Quran and its common denominator of the number 19. After its discovery, many individuals came out of the woodwork to attempt to discredit this miraculous finding, claiming that Bismillah did not contain 19 letters despite what anyone with eyes can see.

A simple proof that the number of letters of Basmalah was not disputed until the mathematical miracle of the Quran is that for generations individuals used to write 786 as an alternative to writing the actual text of Bismillah. They did this because, in Arabic, every letter represents a sound and a number, similar to Roman numerals. The number assigned to each letter is its “Gematrical Value.” The numerical values of the Arabic alphabet are shown below.

Here is how the gematrical value of Bismillah results in a total of 786.

Additionally, the four words in this statement occur in multiples of 19. Let’s start with the three names of God used in this verse: Allah (God), Al-Rahman (The Most Gracious), and Al-Rahim (The Most Merciful).

Allah = 2,698 = 19×142

The word “Allah” ( الله ), which translates to “God” in various forms, occurs 2,698 times in the Quran (19×142). This excludes the 112 occurrences in the non-numbered verses. The full count can be found here.

Most Gracious = 57 = 19×3

The word “l-raḥmāni” ( ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ), which translates to “Most Gracious” in its various forms, occurs 57 times in the Quran (19×3). This excludes the 112 occurrences in the non-numbered verses. It is also worth noting that the word nor the name “rahman” ( رَّحْمَـٰنِ ) never occurs in the Quran without the definite article.

ISM (Name) = 19

The word “ism” (name) stands out from the other three words in the set due to its unique usage pattern and spelling variation in the Quran. It appears in two distinct forms: one with the initial alif (‎اسْم) and one without it, as seen in the construction “bism” (‎بِسْمِ), where the alif is dropped. What we find is that in the singular form—spelled with an alif and without any attached suffixes—the word occurs exactly 19 times in the Quran.

Additional notes:

Professor Cesar Majul looked at the gematrical value of more than 400 attributes of God and found only four names that had gematrical values which are multiples of 19:

The only Divine Names whose gematrical values are divisible by 19 correspond exactly to the frequencies of occurrence of the Basmalah’s four words. The figure below illustrates this remarkable phenomenon:

Since Ism is not a name of God, if we look through the Quran, only one other attribute is used exactly 19 times in reference to God, which is Sheed (Witness).

  1. Peace be upon you my Brother.
I have recently bumped into Quran Talk . I just want to confirm that your allegiance with Rashad Khalifa as the prophet is primarily due to his discovery of Number 19 Miracle and its significance in the Quran. Correct?
If that is the case than what if someone comes up with some another Mathematical miracle in the Quran which supersedes the Number 19 Miracle in significance and answers all the past and present problems that was / is faced by the world. Would you hold him a prophet as well?

    1. Peace,

Rashad never claimed to be a prophet (nabi), but a rasool (messenger). Muhammad was the final prophet (nabi), making the Quran the final scripture. That said, all of God’s messengers come with proof, and Rashad’s proof was code 19. Code 19 is not just a simple finding within the Quran but confirms and purifies many aspects of the book that have been in doubt. So if someone claimed to be a messenger and provided a miracle as encompassing as code 19, I would be inclined to then understand what was their message.

According to Quran a messenger must preach strict monotheism and confirm the previous messages and should not contradict them. In consideration to Rashad, he pointed out using the Quran that almost every facet of the religion of Islam has been corrupted including the Salat, Shahada, Hajj, Zakat, as well as the abandonment of the Quran as the sole source of religious law. Based on this one has to ask, 1. how did so many fail to see these obvious points 2. since so much corruption has entered the religion is it so much of a surprise that God would send a messenger now to lead those who believe out of darkness and into the light?
