A couple of guys were sitting on the river bank doing some fishing, hanging out, and suddenly a child appeared in the river in front of them and was struggling. So one of the guys jumped in and pulled the child out.

A few minutes later, they saw another child comeing down the river, so they jump back in, pull out the child. And this keeps happening. After a little while, the guys are getting pretty exhausted of pulling these kids out. So one of the guys starts walking up the river. The other guy shouts to him to  ask where he’s going, to which he replies “I’m going to go and find the person who’s throwing these kids in the river”.

Upstream: The Quest to Solve Problems Before They Happen – by Dan Heath

A lot of times people focus on the symptoms of their problems without identifying the source of their problems. This tactic has been on full display through the level of hysteria we have been seeing for almost the last two years due to COVID-19. Individuals try to convince people that all their problems will go away if only they follow the experts and don’t realize that these issues they are dealing with are only the symptoms and not the problem.

The root for all our problems is always one and the same which is idol worship. If we can rid ourselves of any form of idol worship it will resolve any fear or grief that we may experience and solve all our problems once and for all.

One of the simplest definitions of idol worship is the belief that any entity independent of God has the power to harm or benefit us.

[5:76] Say, “Would you worship beside GOD powerless idols who can neither harm you, nor benefit you? GOD is Hearer, Omniscient.”

There is only one remedy that can protect us from all pain and suffering, and it cannot be administered or enforced by a doctor, scientist, or politician. It is the only cure-all for every single ailment that a person can possibly experience. It is the only true vaccine that has no side effects, no downside, and provides 100% immunity to any conceivable problem that a person can experience. This solution that will protect us under all circumstances is righteousness.

[7:26] O children of Adam, we have provided you with garments to cover your bodies, as well as for luxury. But the best garment is the garment of righteousness. These are some of GOD’s signs, that they may take heed.

God informs us that if we are appreciative and believe that we are guaranteed to never fear or grieve and that we will have perfect security.

[4:147] What will GOD gain from punishing you, if you became appreciative and believed? GOD is Appreciative, Omniscient.

The moment that we think that something besides God has the ability to benefit or harm us, then we are falling into idol worship and thus making ourselves vulnerable to disaster. This example was shown in the history of Joseph after he interpreted his prison mate’s dreams.

[12:41] “O my prison mates, one of you will be the wine butler for his lord, while the other will be crucified— the birds will eat from his head. This settles the matter about which you have inquired.” [12:42] He then said to the one to be saved “Remember me at your lord.” Thus, the devil caused him to forget his Lord, and, consequently, he remained in prison a few more years.

As demonstrated above, one of the tricks of the devil is to constantly make us forget this simple fact that God is the only One who is full control.

[10:61] You do not get into any situation, nor do you recite any Quran, nor do you do anything, without us being witnesses thereof as you do it. Not even an atom’s weight is out of your Lord’s control, be it in the heavens or the earth. Nor is there anything smaller than an atom, or larger, that is not recorded in a profound record.

If we not only acknowledge this fact but act according to it, then God tells us what the outcome will be in the following verses.

[10:62] Absolutely, GOD’s allies have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

[10:63] They are those who believe and lead a righteous life.

[10:64] For them, joy and happiness in this world, as well as in the Hereafter. This is GOD’s unchangeable law. Such is the greatest triumph.

When God says that this is an unchangeable law, we have to believe this with even more certainty than we have for even the law of gravity. Consider Abraham, when threatened by his people who were worshipping idols.

[6:80] His people argued with him. He said, “Do you argue with me about GOD, after He has guided me? I have no fear of the idols you set up. Nothing can happen to me, unless my Lord wills it. My Lord’s knowledge encompasses all things. Would you not take heed? [6:81] “Why should I fear your idols? It is you who should be afraid, since you worship instead of GOD idols that are utterly powerless to help you. Which side is more deserving of security, if you know?”[6:82] Those who believe, and do not pollute their belief with idol worship, have deserved the perfect security, and they are truly guided.

Now we know that fire burns. This is a physical law that applies to this world, but what did the fire do to Abraham when his people unjustly decided to throw him into it?

[21:68] They said, “Burn him and support your gods, if this is what you decide to do.” [21:69] We said, “O fire, be cool and safe for Abraham.” [21:70] Thus, they schemed against him, but we made them the losers.

This example informs us that if we are righteous and in God’s protection that not even fire can harm us.

Today we are getting inundated with messaging that is perpetually attempting to invoke fear into people. Telling people that if they only do the things that these individuals command then the people will be protected, and only then they will be safe. This messaging is designed to make people lose faith in God and instead follow these worldly authorities.

Rather than focusing on the root of the problem individuals are inundating people with fear and anecdotes that our solution is social distancing, lockdowns, masks, vaccines, boosters, etc. People have gotten so brazen that they ridicule people who believe that God alone is the One who is in full control, and they try to convince believers that they need to abandon their faith in God and put their trust into the hands of “the experts,” bureaucrats, and politicians. But giving into such narratives is thinking these individuals with their advice have the ability to benefit us or protect us from hardship.

[3:174] They have deserved GOD’s blessings and grace. No harm ever touches them, for they have attained GOD’s approval. GOD possesses infinite grace.

It is interesting that immediately after we are informed that if we do the things that please God that no harm will ever touch us, God warns us of the devil’s system of instilling fear into people to sway them away from such understandings.

[3:175] It is the devil’s system to instill fear into his subjects. Do not fear them and fear Me instead, if you are believers.

This is because the devil wants people to think that God’s promise is not true. But to accept such lies from the devil will require us to think that some other force can interfere with the judgment of God when He dictates an outcome for a person.

[10:107] If GOD touches you with a hardship, none can relieve it except He. And when He blesses you, no force can prevent His grace. He bestows it upon whomever He chooses from among His servants. He is the Forgiver, Most Merciful.

The following verse, tells us that for those of us who may have reservations about God’s absolute authority to try the following:

[22:15] If anyone thinks that GOD cannot support him in this life and in the Hereafter, let him turn completely to (his Creator in) heaven, and sever (his dependence on anyone else). He will then see that this plan eliminates anything that bothers him.

Additionally, Psalm 91, informs us how God protects the righteous from any harm.

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he[b] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

While we put 100% trust in God, we can not forget that God also has a system that we are obligated to take part in. Some people think that they discovered a loophole where the rules of this world no longer apply to them. For instance, God says He controls all provisions, so some people think that if they sit on the couch all day and watch Netflix that they will be provided by God despite their laziness. This is a blatant abuse of God’s system, and an ignorance of such people that think that they can outsmart God, as if God did not account for such decisions.

In the following verse, God gives us the example of warning people from throwing themselves into destruction by giving too much to charity than they can afford.

[2:195] You shall spend in the cause of GOD; do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction. You shall be charitable; GOD loves the charitable.

In the next verse, God advises people to prepare all the power they can muster when they go to war.

[8:60] You shall prepare for them all the power you can muster, and all the equipment you can mobilize, that you may frighten the enemies of GOD, your enemies, as well as others who are not known to you; GOD knows them. Whatever you spend in the cause of GOD will be repaid to you generously, without the least injustice.

We see another example of how God recommends believers to stand guard and retain their weapons while they are doing Salat when they are at war.

[4:102] When you are with them, and lead the Contact Prayer (Salat) for them, let some of you stand guard; let them hold their weapons, and let them stand behind you as you prostrate. Then, let the other group that has not prayed take their turn praying with you, while the others stand guard and hold their weapons. Those who disbelieved wish to see you neglect your weapons and your equipment, in order to attack you once and for all. You commit no error, if you are hampered by rain or injury, by putting down your weapons, so long as you remain alert. GOD has prepared for the disbelievers a shameful retribution.

A person could have made the excuse that they were not going to prepare for war or stand guard during a battle by simply claiming God will protect them but such understanding would be in strict defiance to God’s system. Yes, God controls the outcome, and yes, God protects the believers, but we still have to abide by God’s laws that He instituted in this world. Simply being a believer does not mean that we are above the law, and think that if we stick our finger willingly into the fire that it will not burn.

[16:81] And GOD provided for you shade through things which He created, and provided for you shelters in the mountains, and provided for you garments that protect you from heat, and garments that protect when you fight in wars. He thus perfects His blessings upon you, that you may submit.

Willingly throwing ourselves in destruction, is different than when we are propelled in situations outside of our own making. When it is done on our own volition then we have no one to blame for the outcome other than ourselves, but when something happens to us while we are abiding by God’s commandments then we simply have to submit to God and trust that He will protect us, just like he did for Abraham when he was thrown into the fire.

[9:40] If you fail to support him (the messenger), GOD has already supported him. Thus, when the disbelievers chased him, and he was one of two in the cave, he said to his friend, “Do not worry; GOD is with us.” GOD then sent down contentment and security upon him, and supported him with invisible soldiers. He made the word of the disbelievers lowly. GOD’s word reigns supreme. GOD is Almighty, Most Wise.

The devil is going to try to intimidate the believers and have others mock and ridicule them for their beliefs. This may cause some to cave and become more concerned with what others will think of them rather than what God will think of them. God tells us that the trait of the believers is that we strive in the cause of God without fear of any blame. This is because if we are God’s supporters then we should never fear any idols that people set up beside God.

[5:54] O you who believe, if you revert from your religion, then GOD will substitute in your place people whom He loves and who love Him. They will be kind with the believers, stern with the disbelievers, and will strive in the cause of GOD without fear of any blame. Such is GOD’s blessing; He bestows it upon whomever He wills. GOD is Bounteous, Omniscient.

Not all righteous have easy lives and not all the unrighteous have difficult lives.
Allah says he will test us with fear and loss. You haven’t covered prayer, repentence, charity, rememberence etc. Nice write but not fully balanced.

It is not about ease or difficulty, but about how we respond to the situation. God guarantees if we are righteous we will not fear, grieve, or get punished, and that no harm will touch us. So while both a believer and disbeliever will face hardship, the believer will grow from the experience, become stronger, and draw closer to God, while a disbeliever will regress, draw away from God, and thus cause fear and grief upon themselves.

[94:5] With pain there is gain. [94:6] Indeed, with pain there is gain.

[4:79] Anything good that happens to you is from GOD, and anything bad that happens to you is from you. We have sent you as a messenger to the people, and GOD suffices as witness.

[3:170] They are rejoicing in GOD’s grace, and they have good news for their comrades who did not die with them, that they have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve. [3:171] They have good news of GOD’s blessings and grace, and that GOD never fails to reward the believers. [3:172] For those who respond to GOD and the messenger, despite the persecution they suffer, and maintain their good works, and lead a righteous life, a great reward. [3:173] When the people say to them, “People have mobilized against you; you should fear them,” this only strengthens their faith and they say, “GOD suffices us; He is the best Protector.” [3:174] They have deserved GOD’s blessings and grace. No harm ever touches them, for they have attained GOD’s approval. GOD possesses infinite grace. [3:175] It is the devil’s system to instill fear into his subjects. Do not fear them and fear Me instead, if you are believers.

    Excellent write up. Very inspirational.
I would like to hear your thoughts on the following, unrelated to the above article:
Not all Muslims are mumins but all mumins are Muslims.

    1. Peace,

I can see your point if we are using the modern use of these words, but if we use the Quranic definition of these words then the logic is flipped. In the Arabic Quran, the term Muslim is a submitter, while Mumin is a believer. To be a Muslim is describing an action, while Mumin is describing a belief. One cannot be an idol worshiping submitter, but one can be an idol worshiping believer.

[12:106] The majority of those who believe in GOD do not do so without committing idol worship.

We see the criteria of what a submitter is in 2:62 and 5:69.

[2:62] Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Christians, and the converts; anyone who (1) believes in GOD, and (2) believes in the Last Day, and (3) leads a righteous life, will receive their recompense from their Lord. They have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

Additionally, we see that God commands us to call ourselves Muslims as opposed to Mumins.

[49:14] The Arabs said, “We are Mu’mens (believers).” Say, “You have not believed; what you should say is, ‘We are Muslims (submitters),’ until belief is established in your hearts.” If you obey GOD and His messenger, He will not put any of your works to waste. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
